Elite endurance athlete Christian Burke announced today that the third annual running of “The Hermosa 24” will take place the weekend of June 30th in Hermosa Beach, Calif. The 24-hour run in the sand welcomes amateur and elite runners, and students of all ages to run in either the solo or relay category to vie for a Guinness World Record® originally set in the inaugural race by Christian, and broken last year by endurance runner Patrick Sweeney, while raising money for local schools. Adding to the excitement of the weekend, the Los Angeles Galaxy Soccer Organization asked to share the beach with The Hermosa 24 by hosting their Sand Soccer Tournament on the beach alongside Christian’s event.

The Hermosa 24 is a Pier-to-Pier run, from the Hermosa Beach Pier to the Manhattan Beach Pier. To secure the Guinness World Record, runners will need to make the nearly 3.4 mile round-trip more than 26 times in the soft sand.

Almost two years ago, Christian set a Guinness World Record at The Hermosa 24 by running in the sand for 83.04 miles in 24 hours. The widely-covered event attracted thousands of curious onlookers and raised nearly $ 20,000 for local schools. Last year, with the success behind him, Christian organized the event on the same course, challenging other endurance athletes to compete for the 24-hour World Record. Hundreds came out and competed in solo and team categories on a beautiful beach weekend. With Christian’s encouragement, Patrick Sweeney took the title and eclipsed the World Record by just a few miles. The event also continued its ultimate goal of raising money for local schools that desperately need the funds to continue quality education programs for well-deserving students.

“Watching my record taken from me last year was bittersweet,” said Christian. “It was sad to see it go, but it went to a well-deserving athlete for whom I have tremendous respect, but I do want my record back! This year, as the event continues to grow and attracts a field of inspiring athletes, it will be more challenging than ever. Open to all runners, The Hermosa 24 features a solo runner category where racers will attempt to break the year-old World Record. For the many who find that task daunting, Christian is bringing back the popular relay category for teams of up to 10 runners. Stacking the field are some of the world’s top endurance athletes in the solo category. In addition, many relay teams have signed up thus far, among them is a team from Los Angeles SWAT.

The Hermosa 24 course starts and finishes at the entrance of the Hermosa Beach Pier. From there, a well marked path in the soft sand will lead runners to the Manhattan Beach Pier (1.7 miles from Pier to Pier) where they will pass under the Pier, then reverse the course tracing the same path back to the Hermosa Beach Pier over and over again for 24 hours.

Tito Ortiz is regarded world over as one of the most famous MMA (mixed martial arts) fighters in all of UFC history. He’s sold out more pay-per-views than any other fighter in the history of the UFC, had a higher buy rate than Wrestle Mania XIX (the most popular Wrestle Mania of all time), held the light heavyweight title longer than anyone in the history of the UFC for 1,260 days, is a published author, made numerous appearances in a number of Hollywood films and television shows and to top it all off he’s managed a successful crossover into the world of business as the CEO of a million-dollar brand – Punishment Athletics.

While Tito’s best known for his role as an iconic fighter who revolutionized the world of MMA, wresting was the sport to jumpstart his career as a professional fighter. Tito began wrestling his sophomore year at Huntington Beach High School. Under coach Paul Herrera, Tito placed 4th in the state high school championships as a senior. Following high school, he continued his wrestling career winning a California state junior college title for Golden West College. From there, he went on to wrestle at Cal State Bakersfield. It was there that he gained invaluable experience training under the tutelage of future NCAA and world champion Stephen Neal.

Tito later went on as a submission wrestler competing in the 2000 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling tournament, in the under 99 kg division. He finished in third place after winning four fights before losing in the semi-final to Ayaz Qadir. During the tournament he defeated Matt Hughes, Mike van Arsdale, Rumina Sato and Rostyslav Borysenko.

Thanks to his sound training as a wrestler, Tito was able to make a smooth and somewhat prolific shift into the world of MMA where he went on to make history. His successful transition was an important one that would later pave the way for future wrestlers also looking to make crossover from one sport to the next. While Tito climbed the ranks of the UFC, he always kept wrestling near and dear to his heart returning to the sport as a professional wrestling referee in 2005 for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA).

The Outstanding American Honoree Award is given to someone who has competed in wrestling, and become highly successful in their profession and used discipline learned in wrestling to reach those levels. Only two other people have received the award since 1997 including Mario Lopez and Dan Henderson. The award itself is typically reserved for the rare and special few who have given a great deal to the sport with little recognition for their contributions. This is one of the wrestling community’s highest honors and special way of saying thank you to those who have dedicated their careers to paving the way for others. Following the induction, Tito’s name will be etched on a plaque at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Museum.

Tito’s induction into the Wrestling Hall of Fame comes at an interesting time in his professional career. On July 7th, 2012, millions will tune-in to see Tito duke it out in what will likely be his final fight in the UFC. It’s a highly anticipated trilogy match against Forrest Griffith. Whether or not Tito will make a return to wrestling via the WWE remains to be seen. One thing, however, is for sure. Win, lose, or draw – Tito’s got the heart of a lion both in and out of the ring. His vast accomplishments and dedication has made him an outstanding role model not only in the world of wrestling, but for the entire athletic community. Clearly, the best is yet to come from this legendary fighter.

Johnston County criminal defense and traffic law attorney Michael J. Reece said today that anyone charged in the state’s recent “No Need 2 Speed” or “Booze It & Lose It” law enforcement campaigns should contact a lawyer to make sure their legal rights are protected.

“A traffic violation conviction of any kind goes on your record and costs you money in higher insurance premiums for years to come,” said Reece of the Smithfield criminal defense firm of Reece & Reece, Attorneys at Law.

“It is a mistake to shrug off even the most minor traffic ticket and think you are simply paying a fine,” he said.

Reece, who has dedicated his entire legal career to defending residents of Smithfield, Benson, Clayton and elsewhere in Johnston County, said North Carolina traffic ticket campaigns, such as “No Need 2 Speed” held April 2 to 8 and a “Booze It & Lose It” drive held St. Patrick’s Day weekend, often result in citations for a variety of offenses.

The Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) said state and local law enforcement officers issued a total of 39,150 traffic and criminal citations statewide during the “No Need 2 Speed” campaign. Officials cited 13,435 motorists for speeding, 34.3 percent of the total citations issued.

The 635 total traffic and criminal violations charged in Johnston County during April’s “No Need 2 Speed” included 330 speeding tickets, 20 driving while impaired (DWI) charges, 37 seat belt or child restraint charges, 26 drug violations, five fugitive arrests and a stolen vehicle recovered.

A state Department of Transportation (DOT) news release says that state and local law enforcement officers cited 819 motorists for DWI during the St. Patrick’s Day “Booze It & Lose It” campaign, which ran March 15-18.

But the total of 23,222 traffic and criminal citations issued statewide during the campaign also included 6,492 speeding violations, 1,881 safety belt infractions, 373 child passenger safety violations and 706 drug charges, the DOT says.

Checkpoint stops over the holiday weekend also resulted in apprehension of 416 fugitives from justice and recovery of 33 stolen vehicles.

Reece said anyone arrested or ticketed at a checkpoint or in another special law enforcement campaign should act quickly to engage legal help.

Winding down after a busy day to the quiet of the night with Dorme: A Magical Dreamland Visit

The day writer and filmmaker Sylvia Binsfeld heard the Brazilian lullaby Dorme, by chance while filming in a children’s clothing boutique, she had no idea of the turn her life would take and the journey she was about to embark on. Instantly carried away by the mesmerizing melody, she bought the CD on the spot. While lying on her bed that night listening to the melody and watching her baby sleep, mom Sylvia Binsfeld thought about how fast kids grow up, and how different things are these days for children from when she was a child.

“The world has become so noisy and fast-paced, with information coming at us from all sides. Children are inundated with adult information, even in media that is supposedly intended for them. They are exposed to negative messages on television and elsewhere. That’s not good for their spirit. Listening to the enchanting lullaby Dorme brought back memories from my own childhood, and I wanted to create something to recapture that sense of innocence and magical imagination for children today. I liked the idea of giving children positive messages right before drifting into sleep, to counteract all that sometimes scary information. So I got in touch with nine-time platinum musician Arnaldo Antunes, who composed the song Dorme, and told him about my idea for a visual lullaby film. We created an agreement, and my incredible odyssey began,” explains Binsfeld.

Binsfeld admits that, even with her extensive film background, she couldn’t have known just how difficult the task would be to create Dorme, which she wanted to keep natural and organic-looking. A brief seven minutes in length, Dorme took longer to produce than a featurette she had worked on. “On my budget, I had to fight hard to get the high quality I wanted and to keep it true to my vision. I did much of the work myself, plus I stayed intimately involved with every step of the process.” Although the film attracted a fantastic pool of talent, such as cinematographer Svetlana Cvetko whose work won an academy award, there were major hurdles along the way. For example, Binsfeld used over 100 special effects to create the spiritually moving dreamland fantasy. She recalls, “But then I had to take the film away from the people originally working on the effects after six months and start over, with my gem-of-a-find, FX guru Steve Wright. I went through scary times financially, and ultimately ended up selling my home to finish the project, with the conviction that once it got out into the world, I would make sure it was the beginning of something wonderful for my baby and me as well. The first book set is the foundation to build on. I plan on doing a five visual lullaby book series. Now the irony is that the word dorme means sleep, but once I started working on the film, I stopped getting any sleep—I lived on four or five hours sleep a night for over a year and a half…and then the real work began!”

Before she started working with film, Binsfeld attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco, with the intention of becoming a children’s book author/illustrator. “Books have been my first love,” says Binsfeld. “As someone who can’t walk anywhere near a bookstore without going in to unearth some treasure, from the start I knew this enchanting story I had in my head would become a children’s book.” To illustrate the book, Dorme: A Magical Dreamland Visit, she worked with images from the film, which by now had premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film was invited to appear in another 37 festivals, and won best film at the Wine Country Film Festival, the audience award at the Danville International Children’s Film Festival and two national awards, the Telly Award and the KIDS FIRST! Coalition for Quality Children’s Media Award.

From the fan mail she was receiving, Binsfeld was surprised to discover that Dorme, the film, was striking a chord in both children and adults! Dorme recalled for them a feeling of hope, innocence and the magical imagination of childhood that we often lose touch with in adulthood. People also loved discovering the hidden dream meanings.

Although she was delighted to have re-created those feelings for so many people through the film, Binsfeld knew that the picture book would focus on a much smaller age group, ages 2 to 7. Spinning the story took time, since the messages in the book needed to match the mood in the film. “I wanted the text to be a little melodic, to match the lullaby feeling.”

The book Dorme: A Magical Dreamland Visit was another major labor of love for Binsfeld. Together with the tranquil, short visual lullaby film, the book will help kids with the transition from a busy day, to the quiet of the night and make bedtime something to look forward to…for both parents and children. And the book is meant to encourage a love for reading and exploring in a child. Weaving together the wisdom found in our subconscious with the magical imagination of childhood, Dorme: A Magical Dreamland Visit creates a fantastical journey that’s sure to be a favorite with everyone who opens its pages.
